Something I feel needs saying: When I write about poverty it is always with a hyper awareness of my own privilege. That I am a college educated white person. That I have a spouse with 3.5 degrees. I know that with all of the privilege that we have we still struggle to reach any level of financial security for our family. The reasons for the struggle are complex but real. However, if we cannot easily just "get a job" or "make better choices" or "work harder," then I can only try and imagine how hard it is for people who are less privileged.
I write to try and express my own experience. I also write to try and raise awareness for those who often go unseen or who are so deeply in survival mode they cannot express their own experience.
